The Greenway is a combination of a pedestrian walkway and nature trail along the Hackensack River with views of the river, cities, and mountains. It has entrance and way-finding signs as well as trail blazes. With over a dozen access points, one can use small sections of the trail as well as traverse the entire 3.5 miles. In a fully developed community, the Greenway provides a unique natural area close to home. Native vegetation is encouraged within the Greenway to protect and improve the Hackensack River by creating a natural green buffer between Teaneck's developed area and the river thus creating a wildlife habitat as well. Award-winning interpretive signs designed by local artist Richard Mills are found along the length of the Greenway, offering narratives of river life and connecting walkers to our local natural and cultural histories. Class trips for children and walking tours for adults help develop a community of citizens who will be advocates for an environmentally safe and clean Hackensack River and its Greenway. There are canoe and Kayak access points. Planned activities along the trail include walks, birding activities, talks, canoe trips, concerts, clean-up, planting, and control of invasive plants sponsored by Friends of the Hackensack River, a 501 c (3) organization.
