The trail is a 100-mile network of water trails and greenways combining seven state heritage preserves with a national landmark historic district, a national wildlife refuge, a state park, and a military base. The trail offers opportunities for biking, fishing, boating, hiking, and horseback riding.

A guidebook for the trail is available and features the Port Royal Sound Sea Kayak Trail, a 24-image aerial photo collage, site maps for 14 destinations, 100 miles of blueway trails, 11 boat landings, and latitude and longitude coordinates.
