The Healthy Active Community Running River Trail was finished in 2009 by a combination of several entities. The US Army Corps of Engineers, Hermitage School District, Hickory County Health Department, and Hickory County Community Improvement Coalition were all involved in the design and implementation of this trail. All of these partners and numerous volunteers have invested time, effort, and funds in the development of the 3.1-mile trail.

The Running River Trail was created to promote healthier lifestyles by providing an outdoor recreational opportunity for people of all ages. The 3.1-mile looped trail meanders along the Pomme de Terre River for one and one-fourth miles before looping back through a beautiful stand of timber containing Oak, Hickory, and Easter Red Cedars. The trail continues through the timber before looping back and joining up at the trailhead entrance. A short cutoff is available for those that would like to enjoy being outdoors without experiencing the rolling terrain. The cutoff is approximately one-half mile long.

The trail is wonderful for all activities including hiking, jogging, and biking. It is layered with a crushed rock path that is eight feet wide, allowing for easy navigation through the trail as well as providing a solid surface. The creation of this trail in Outlet Park has brought in a large number of visitors while also providing an area for campers and others to enjoy the outdoors. Because this is the only trail of its kind in the area it gets lots of use. The Hermitage School District cross country team practices on the trail every day after school and they host a cross country meet each fall and then the district meet is also held on the Running River Trail. This has brought in as many as 40 schools to the trail to participate in the cross-country meet. The Hickory County Community Improvement Coalition also hosts an annual 5K running event at the Running River Trail. This April will be their fifth race and the number of participants grows each year.
