This approximately 11-mile trail system is a hidden treasure of Tuscaloosa County locals who often ride it on a daily basis after work or school. The trail system is open to mountain bikers, trail runners, hikers, and those who enjoy walking on trails that are shaded by a dense canopy of mixed hardwoods and pines.

The area within Sokol Park that contains the trail system is relatively compact making the trail sections very tight and almost stacked onto one another. This layout makes navigating the trails on your own like moving in a maze in spite of decent signage and the West Alabama Mountain Biking Assn. (WAMBA) trail map. We recommend that new trail users either join a WAMBA group ride or team up with a friendly local in the parking lot to "learn the trail".
In spite of the navigational challenges, getting lost is not a great concern since all trails are loops that either come back to the Main Sokol Trail or return to the field that is adjacent to the parking lot. The majority of the trails are rated intermediate (per International Mountain Biking Association rating criteria) due to tight turns, roots, constantly changing elevation, and the occasional trail grade that exceeds 15%.
To find the trailhead enter Munny Sokol Park from Ol' Colony Road (a connector between Watermelon Road and Rice Mine Road) by turning north at the main entrance into the Park. Drive past two large baseball and soccer parking lots (on the left) and go about .3 miles before turning right into a small but obvious paved trailhead parking lot. Check out the bulletin board for maps, trail information, and updates.
The trail system starts just south of the parking area at the edge of an open field. The trail start is marked with a White sign indicating the start. Follow the dirt path through the field and then turn right at the next sign (a red directional arrow) into the woods. This is the beginning of the "Bunny" and "Lagoon" sections of singletrack. These trails are excellent for entry-level mountain bikers.
The trails are maintained by WAMBA volunteers. Workdays are done on a bi-monthly schedule as indicated on the WAMBA website calendar.
