Location: Approx. 10 miles south of Florence, OR., At Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, off U.S. Highway 101, north of Reedsport.

  • States: Oregon
  • Counties: Douglas

The trail goes through a mile of conifer forest, opening onto the dunes and views of the ocean. The trail then re-enters onto a smaller stand of shore pine and ends at the ocean.

Always use caution on the beach. Watch for sneaker waves, know the tide schedule, and stay away from logs in the surf or on wet sand. Look out for deep water and strong currents.

Also, look for Snowy Plover seasonal closure area signs. Please respect nesting birds' privacy.

A great mix of coast hiking

The Tahkenitch Dunes Trail starts in a rainforest with lush trees and older Sitka Spruce. Eventually (depending on the direction of the loop you take) you'll end on the dunes. The hiking gets difficult on steep sand for a bit then levels off and into a band of coastal pines that separate the dunes from the beach. On the beach, the trail goes approx 1 mile before heading back up the dunes, past Three-mile Lake and then deep into the rainforest. Highly recommended hike.
